Tuned-In.

Six weeks ago we did something we've been talking about doing for 10 years. We got rid of our television programming. I always thought this transition would be so hard, which is why I dragged my feet for so long. But you know, it hasn't been. We are reading more, listening to more music, having great conversations, sleeping better and connecting as a couple and family. The children are so engaged in creative play, toys are fun again! And we are seeing less restlessness, whining and boredom from The Little Girls. We have had satelite TV for 13 years, paying $85 a month. Here's the math and shocker...we've paid $13,260 in TV entertainment. Yep. Not to mention the money spent on energy to power the damn thing. Ugh.
Thinking about the hours of TV we have watched, the money we've spent and knowing what I know now these last six weeks without the noise of the tv and its distraction, makes me realize how much precious time has been wasted and what very little I've gained. This step towards living more simply, fully and presently has changed our homelife significantly. It's funny, we always tuned-in and ended up tuning-out. Now we've tuned-out in order to really tune-in.

  1. Woohoo! :) Good for you guys!

I have the hardest time stepping away from the TV. Gabe and I recently cancelled our Netflix and Hulu...we can't access either from Kuwait and for some reason had been holding on to them like pathetic losers. Our total cost on that was about $30/month...it doesn't seem like much but adds up so fast. We still watch a fair amount of TV through iTunes and stuff, but I'm trying to cut back. And inspired to hear others are doing it too! :)

Hooray for saving those dollars! Maybe you can up your weekly allowance from $20 to $25 now? Treat yourself to an extra Starbucks? ;)
